Alvar and Aino Aalto

The couple worked closely together and were both founding members of Artek.The life's work of Academician Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) ranges from complete town plans to small furnishing details and textile prints. Aalto's creative power and the intensity of all his art produced a large number of buildings, many of which are unique artistic entities. The best-known of these is Villa Mairea (1938) located in Noormarkku, South-West Finland and designed together with Aino Aalto. In addition to buildings, Aalto produced a continuous stream of lighting fixture, furniture and interior designs.

Aino Aalto had a strong impact on Artek's line of design both as a designer and managing director. In addition to buildings, interiors and furniture designed jointly with Alvar Aalto, Aino Aalto was also famous for her glass design, and her classic glassware for Iittala are among its best ever products.
